THE BEACH AT THE WEST END OF THE ISLAND WAS DESIGNATED AS "GREEN BEACH" BY THE MILITARY
THIS PHOTO
WAS TAKEN SHORTLY AFTER 21 NOV 1943
The
photo can be dated as sometime after the 1st Battalion 6th Marines
landed on 21 NOV 1943. The rubber boats used in the landing can
be seen clustered near the north end of Green Beach. It was probably
taken within a day or two after the 1/6 landing, since the LVTs used
in the 20 NOV 1943 landing can still be seen clustered on the "Bird's
Beak" at the northwest
corner of the island, at the intersection of Green Beach and Red Beach
One. |
SGT. SMILEY DESCRIBED THE LOCATION OF HIS LVT-1 He said that their LVT-1 was parked on the beach where they landed, about 30-40 feet north of the twin coastal gun emplacement and about three feet from the water’s edge. He said that his LVT-1 was parked with the rear of the tractor toward the 8-inch guns and the front toward the bird's beak, and parallel to the seawall. He does not remember how close to the wall it was, but said that it was probably right against it. |
